This is a 2-hour workshop exploring the power of docupoetry: a kind of socially engaged poetry that often uses nonliterary texts—news reports, legal documents, and transcribed oral histories, for example—and sometimes incorporates original reporting. Also called docupoetry, the genre historically tends to focus on relating the experiences of people whose stories might have been misrepresented or overlooked.
Instructor Farrah Hasan, Ph.D student and Tayseer Seminary graduate, will share her experience working with archives and her creative process for writing poetry from it. From there, she will give 2-3 options of archival sources for participants to explore. You will engage in have a brief discussion of what stood out to you from the archives, and then have some time to write your own. We will end with sharing a few pieces, and I’ll provide resources to move forward with.
